In Every Story, There is Strength: May is Mental Health Month

This month, take action, raise your voice, and help change the conversation around mental health!

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been an important driving force in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. Now, more than ever, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) wants you to be part of this movement.

Whether by sharing your story, spreading awareness, or advocating for change, every action helps break the stigma and build a more supportive world for everybody.

IN EVERY STORY THERE IS STRENGTH

This year’s theme is “In Every Story, There’s Strength.” Mental health journeys are personal, but the strength found within them is relevant for all people. “In Every Story, There’s Strength” highlights the resilience and diverse experiences that shape mental health experiences within our community.

The 2025 campaign celebrates the power of storytelling to fuel connection, understanding, and hope for those navigating their mental health. Each story shared is a testament to the possibility of recovery and the strength that lies within us all.

By embracing and sharing your experiences, you empower others to do the same. Together, we create a movement of courage, healing, and connection. Share your mental health story by posting on social media, using #MyMentalHealth.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

According to NAMI, one in five US adults experiences mental illness each year, and one in 20 experiences serious mental illness each year.

One in six American youth between the ages of 6 and 17 experiences a mental health disorder each year. Fifty percent of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75 percent by age 24. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10–14.

Mental Health Awareness Month was established to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness.

TAKE ACTION

Mental Health America, the nation’s leading nonprofit dedicated to improving mental health and well-being, has provided an action guide for Mental Health Awareness Month.

You can take action for yourself or take action for all. Mental health is a personal journey, but it’s also a movement—and you don’t need to be an expert to make a difference.

Mental health can’t wait. Taking action for your own mental well-being—whether by setting boundaries, reaching out for support, or practicing self-care—can make a lasting difference.

Mental health conditions are frequently behind compulsive substance misuse and behavioral addictions. Trauma, anxiety disorders, and depression often co-occur with substance use disorder (SUD). Many people with addiction are simply trying to cope with unprocessed mental health issues.

THE BEST TREATMENT PROGRAM IS A CHOICE

Beginning mental health treatment can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Foundry Front Range aims to be the gold standard for comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Your choice of treatment matters, and not every provider offers the same types or levels of care or specialties. Individual needs, health, history, lifestyle, and other factors should influence your choice. Choosing the right provider can mean the difference between achieving sustainable recovery and having to repeat treatment.

Modern, evidence-based addiction treatment needs to be trauma-informed and dual diagnosis capable, addressing the needs of the patient as a whole person, including their life experiences, and going far beyond simply suppressing powerful cravings to use drugs and alcohol.
